Top 10 Skincare Items that has Changed my skincare Routine. November 1, 2010

Inspired by Joseibi’s 10 Wonder Products for Dry and Dehydrated Skin, I decided that i would do my own Top 10 list of Skincare Items that has changed my Skincare routine forever.

I would be doing a full-scale review of these 10 items soon.

No 10. Decleor’s Reflet de Purete

Probably my favourite cleanser ever ( used to be SKII’s Foaming Cleanser).  This cleanser works by deep cleansing the skin. It contains essential and jojoba oils, stabilized enzymes, and cotton milk. Your skin feels very soft YET hydrated after cleansing. However, do note that this cleanser is only used in Decleor Spa centres and are not available for retail, but you can definitely find them online or on Ebay. Pores appear smaller right after cleansing.

No 9. DermaRollers

Suffering from acne and cystic acne during my teenager years left me scarred with enlarges pores, and crated scars on my skin. Unfortunately, there is no cream that will solve this problem so when i found out about Derma Rollers 2 years ago, i decided to try it. I have to say Derma Rollers have really helped with my scars. There are different sized needles, used to treat different problems. I will elaborate on the full scale review.

No 8. Skinceuticals Phloretin CF Serum

Skinceuticals Phloretin CF is a preventive, corrective, antioxidant treatment to fight against free radical damage to combat skin aging and reverse sun damage. The Phloretin is for those with oily skin while the Ferulic is for those with dry skin. It brightens the skin and does not break it out, however those with sensitive skin should try this product before buying it.  Patent-pending, breakthrough antioxidant combination of 2% phloretin, 10% L-ascorbic acid, and 0.5% ferulic acid for broad-spectrum antioxidant performance.

No 7. BB Creams

Baviphat-Dream-Girls-Magic-Plus-BB-Cream-SPF30-PA-

I am talking about BB Creams in general and not the Baviphat one. BB Creams has become a staple routine in my skincare since i started using my first ever BB Cream ( which was my sister’s SkinFood Aloe BB Cream ). BB Creams brightens up the skin immediately and covers up the flaws on your skin. The plus side, it is packed with nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants. Downside, it is full of silicones. Still on the search of looking for the perfect BB Cream that will make it into my Top 10 list.

No 6. SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence @ Miracle Water

ii-facial-treatment-essence4314

This product is either a miss or hit for you. Those with sensitive skin usually have a problem with the essence. I started using this product during my teenage acne years, and this was THE product that really saved my skin back then. I had lots of post-acne scars, and my face was full of red spots, and after 6 months of using this product, the red spots disappeared gradually. However, i’m sure that the SK-II WHITENING SOURCE DERM-DEFINITION and WHITENING SOURCE DERM-REVIVAL MASK did help a lot in clearing my red spots. Also to add, the Facial Treatment Mask is one of the best hydration mask ever. You will also notice that your skin becomes instantly smooth right after you apply the essence.

No 5. Clarisonic

51dHsubSztL._SS500_

The Clarisonic has become such a star in my family that almost all my family members cannot live without their Clarisonic. It cleanses the skin really well, so if you want to invest, invest in a Clarisonic instead of an expensive cleanser. It brushes off the dead skin and preps your skin to absorb your serum/cream. Trust me, the investment is worth it.

No 4. Sulwhasoo’s Overnight Treatment Pack

ufo_f_413023007_370

Overnight sleeping mask and pack are big in Asia but almost none-existent in Western skincare. I came by this brand after being introduced to it by my best friend who gave me a sample of the Overnight Treatment Pack. I loved it SOO much that i bought the full size and since then, it has become a staple step in my night time skincare routine. This overnight pack is formulated with Chinese Medicinal Herbs ( Angelica, Pomegranate, Walnut, White Mulberry etc ). It creates an essential moisture layer on the skin, thus assuring optimum penetration of nourishing herbs while you sleep. And when u wake up and look in the mirror, you’ll be happy with the results : smooooth radiant baby skin and even the pores are less noticeable!  Since then i have bought every single item on Sulwhasoo’s basic skincare range, and it has become the no.1 Skincare brand for me.

No 3. Darphin’s 8 Flower Nectar

da_D308_200

This dry oil derived from 8 exotic flowers around the world Enriched with essential vitamins & Omega 3  & 6. Benefit from the unique blend of 8 pure essential oils:
EVERLASTING to reveal a healthy glow. IRIS to calm and rebalance. JASMINE to promote elasticity. LAVENDER to soften and soothe. NEROLI to improve skin’s suppleness. PATCHOULI to firm and tone. ROSE to boost natural radiance. YLANG YLANG to help relieve stress.

There was a period where i was obsessed with Essential Oils, so i tried almost every single essential oil care from Darphin and Decleor. This one was the winner no doubt! First of all the smell is amazing, and enough to send you to heaven and a good night’s sleep. It also leaves your skin smooth and supple when you wake up. However, it doesn’t quite justify the price, so my advice is that only buy this if you see a very good deal.

No 2. Darphin’s Skin Mat Serum and Lotion

skin_mat_right

One of the only serum and lotion that really works in controlling my oily skin. This two products are really effective in controlling oil, and not only that they smell really good and feels super comfortable and light on the skin. This is one line that i would buy all the time regardless of the price! Smile

No 1. Facial Massage

skin-home-main

Your hands are really your best friend when it comes to taking care of your skin. Plus, it’s free ! So make good use of this babies. Facial Massage has become such an important step in my skincare routine after reading the Chizu Saeki’s The Japanese Skincare Revolution: How to Have the Most Beautiful Skin of Your Life–At Any Age . I will elaborate more about these on another post.

Etude House Dr Oil Solution Anti Shine Dual Primer October 30, 2010

Introduction

Dr Oil is the latest Etude House range for the oily skin. It currently houses three products – one the Shine Free Dual Primer and the other Anti-Shine BB Lotion SPF 20 PA++, and the last being  Anti-Shine Mist. It is relatively new therefore you would not be able to find any information regarding this two products on the Etude House English Official site.

What’s nice about this line is that it is paraben-free, , oil-free and non-comedogenic.

For more information on this range, head over to kiraramirez’s blog : click here!

For reviews regarding the Anti Shine Mist , head over to KittyBoBeep’s blog : click here!

For reviews regarding the Anti-Shine BB Lotion, head over to Queen Koko’s blog : click here!

For other reviews regarding the Shine Free Dual Primer, head over to SugarPao’s blog ( click here! ) and The Beauty Blog (  click here! )

Packaging

The Korean Cosmetics Industry are getting more and more innovative with their packaging compared to their Western counterparts. This product consist of two parts – first on the cap is the primer, and on the tube : the moisturiser. On top of that, there is also a little mirror! Very cute.

However, i do have one complain about it. It is actually very unhygienic to apply the primer using your fingers. Dirt/Dust, bacteria and germs will definitely get stuck on it. Already after a few applications, there are dust and dirt on my primer. So i do advice you to make sure your hands are verrrrrry clean before you even touch this.

Directions

1. Firstly, use the moisturiser and apply it on your face.

2. Then, use your clean fingers and apply the primer to enlarged pore areas. Blend and rub in with your fingers.

Ingredients

My photo was kind of blur so i am going to borrow a photo of The Beauty Blog’s Ingredient list ( Thanks! )

o

Though this product claims to be paraben-free, oil-free and non-comedogenic, it does contains lots of other ingredients that are in the ‘no-no’ list like Alcohol, Silicones, Talc , Petrolatum, etc..

1. Silicones :  Dimethicones – Silica – Phenyl Trimethicone ( it has a drier finish than Dimethicones) –  Methicones – Silica Sylate – and the list is exhaustive.  There is NO SINGLE DOUBT that there will be lots lots lots of silicones on this product without even having to look at it. Therefore, one should be weary that too much silicones on your skin will suffocate your skin and make it not able to ‘breathe’. And that is how the principle of this product works. The silicones form a layer on your skin to make it smooth and therefore blocks the secretion of oil. I would not recommend this on a daily use as it will tire the skin. There is even alcohol in the moisturiser which a lot of products avoid using these days.

2. Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer  – is a film former used in cosmetics and beauty products, as well as a viscosity increasing agent. It is a porous polymer that absorbs excess of sebum or acne-producing oils.

3. Talc – I have talked about the dangers of talc in my previous review of Crazy Monkey BB Cream Review ( click here! )

4. Sorbitan Olivate – an olive oil derived ingredient used as an emulsifier (helps blend ingredients that can’t usually blend together). To read more of Sorbitan Olivate, please head over here!

5. Microcrystalline wax – type of wax produced by de-oiling petrolatum.

6. Grapefruit , Lemon, Lavender, Tea Tree and Camelia Leaf extracts – commonly found in anti acne, anti – oily skin products due to their soothing properties.

7. Castor Oil – famous for its moisturising properties. It grabs moisture from the air and holds it close to the skin. It also thickens the mixture of cosmetic products, allowing the ingredients to remain more stable. It is gentle to the skin and does not cause irritation unlike tea tree oil.

Texture

a) Moisturiser – Texture of moisturiser is very smooth and velvety ( of course! it has all sorts of silicones in it! ) It sinks right away on the skin and feels light and comfortable. It also has a light perfume scent to it (contains fragrance like all korean cosmetics which i personally do not like because because it contains many toxic chemicals and they are not listed in ingredients but simply just as Fragrance ).

b) Primer – I do have a problem with this. I really do feel that im killing my skin each time i apply this. Once you apply this on your finger, you will definitely feel a sandy powdery feeling ( sand-paper like effect ). I really do feel that all this powder tiny particles are meant to block every single breathing cells in my skin. Your skin of course feels very smooth and velvety once you rub it in your pores.

Oil Control

This product definitely has faaaantastic oil control. It kept my skin not so oily even after 6-8 hours and it does what it claims to – control oil. It also helps to make the BB Cream hold longer in place. Gives you a slight matte finish to it.

Conclusion

I do really have a love hate relationship with this product and i’m sure those who use this product will feel torn between skin health or looking beautiful. This product is fantastic at controlling oil, but at the same time, it is full of silicones, wax, alcohol – substances that are not beneficial for your skin and prevents it from breathing.

You would really have to find a balance between this. For those who are not really bothered by silicones and have OK-Healthy skin, i would recommend this product. But for those who already have skin problems like acne, etc and have a problem with silicones, petrolatum and alcohol in your products – i would recommend you to stay away from this.

Personally, i only use this product when i have the need to look fantastic. It really helps in controlling your sebum and the shine on my face.

This product helps you in the short run, but will it ruin your skin in the long haul?

Breaking News : Beware of IPKN’s Whitening BB Cream October 18, 2010

Today, two Taiwanese inspection companies have found a strong quantity of ‘fluorescent whitening agents’ in IPKN’s Whitening BB Cream.

Firstly , what are these fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) ?

According to Wikipedia :

fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) are chemicals that absorb light in the ultraviolet and violet region (usually 340-370 nm) of the electromagnetic spectrum, and re-emit light in the blue region (typically 420-470 nm). Fluorescent activity is a short term or rapid emission response, unlike phosphorescence, which is a delayed emission. These additives are often used to enhance the appearance of color of fabric and paper, causing a perceived “whitening” effect, making materials look less yellow by increasing the overall amount of blue light reflected.

Optical brighteners have also found use in cosmetics. One application is to formulas for washing and conditioning grey or blonde hair, where the brightener can not only increase the luminance and sparkle of the hair, but can also correct dull, yellowish discoloration without darkening the hair. Some advanced face and eye powders contain optical brightener microspheres that brighten shadowed or dark areas of the skin, such as “tired eyes”.

Fluorescent whitening agents have been found to be carcinogenic. When exposed to large quantities, they may cause stomach, liver and kidney damage. The fluorescent agent itself may cause allergic skin reactions that product allergic dermatitis, eczema and even increase the burden on our liver and kidney.

However till this day, there hasn’t been any standards if Fluorescent Agents can be added into skincare products. Neither was this Fluorescent Agent recorded in its ingredient’s list. Further tests will be conducted and if found guilty, the company will be fined for NT 10 million taiwan dollars.
