Charmzone releases new sunscreens March 30, 2011

Charmzone is relatively foreign to non-koreans, but it is a staple household Korean brand.

From the Joseibi website :

Established as Bu-Han Cosmetic Co., Charmzone was first based at the Pee-Bo Drug Store, from 1960 for 20 years. After graduating from the college of pharmacy of Sung- Kyun- Kwan University in 1966, Kwang-Seok Kim , founder and Chairman of Charmzone, studied the skin of Korean women for 20 years while practicing pharmacy. After compiling data on the skin characteristics of about 300,000 women who had consulted with him, in 1984, he decided to create a cosmetic company that could meet the needs of these women. Charmzone was originally founded as Bu-Han Cosmetic Co. The two Chinese characters, “Bu”, “Han” mean “prosperity”, and “wealth” respectively. The goal from the beginning was to become the premier cosmetic company in the world. Because of Charmzone, women around the world are becoming even more beautiful.

Charmzone has recently released two new sunscreens called the Albatross Daily Sun SPF 35 / PA ++ and the Charmzone Alba Tross Lesports Sun SPF 50 / PA +++.

The Albatross Daily Sun SPF 35 PA ++ 60ml forms a protective barrier to the tired skin, enriched with peptides and hyaluronic acid. It can be used also as a make-up base.

The Albatross Lesports Sun SPF 50 / PA +++ is a light, waterproof sunscreen and is perfect for sportswear. No need to worry that your sweat will wipe off the sun protection.

Sum 37 Sun Away Baked Essence

LG’s Su:m 37 has introduced recently an essence powder pact called the Su:m 37 Sun-Away Baked Essence Sun SPF 50+ / PA +++.

This is sunblock powder which is called an essence powder because it also contains the benefits of an essence together with the powder.

The new baked powder sun block can be applied regularly on the make up without causing the powder to spead in the air.

The powder contains woodapple elements which have been used for about 2000 years in Myanmar to aid the cooling of the skin ( caused by intense sun rays ), contraction of the pores and adjusts the levels of water and oil.

Serves as a functional make up with high sun protection SPF 50 / PA +++

Brightens the skin and provides moisture without clogging pores or causing skin problems

No addition of artificial fragrance, artificial colouring, and synthetic preservatives.

I did some research on Sum 37’s claim on this and it turns out to be true :

The Burmese-Myanmar would use a stem with the bark of the Woodapple intact  ( picture above ) and use a specially made ‘grind-stone’ to make it into a paste and directly apply it on their skin as skincare.

Woodapple Barks

Stone slabs for grinding woodapple cosmetics at a pagoda market.

Called as the ‘Thanaka Cream’ by Burmese women , the Thanaka cream is made by grinding the bark, wood, or roots of woodapple with a small amount of water. It has a fragrant smell somewhat similar to sandalwood. The use of woodapple bark paste dates back to the founding of the first Burmese kingdoms in the 1st century B.C.

The woodapple elements gives a cooling sensation and provides protection from sunburn. It is believe to also help remove acne and promote smooth skin. It is also an anti fungal.

From its origins over two millennia ago to the present day, Burmese women vouch that Thanaka helps remove acne, promote smooth skin and act as a sun block, antiseptic, anti-fungal ointment and toner. As a result, for many Burmese women the paste is an essential part of their beauty routine.

To read more on the history of Thanaka, click here.

To purchase : type 숨37˚ 선 어웨이 베이크드 에센스 선 on Gmarket.

Found the ad quite cute, check out how the Sum 37 Baked Essence is made in contrary to the traditional way of preparing Thanaka (woodapple) Paste  :

Also from the Estee Lauder company, Bobbi Brown has released it’s own version of the BB Cream. Comes in 3 colours ( Light, Fair, Extra Light ).

5) La Roche Posay UVIDEA XL BB Cream SPF 50 / PA +++ 유비데아 BB

This came as quite a pleasant surprise for us. One of France’s biggest drug store brand – La Roche Posay is also releasing their own version of the BB Cream under the Uvidea XL line. La Roche Posay’s sunscreen has been recommended by a lot of dermatologists worldwide for it’s sunscreen and is one of the most popular sunscreens in the world. Containing MeXoryL SX, a unique organic UV filter that is highly protective against short UVA waves.

Which to pick off the 5?

A test was conducted among the 5 BB Creams by a team of women.

Estee Lauder’s BB Cream was chosen as the BB Cream that brighten dull skin tone the most. We agree on this because we tested the BB Cream ( review here ) and it really illuminates the skin, giving radiant glowing skin ( due to it’s unique blend of optics )

Sulwhasoo’s Snowise BB Base was the clear favourite and winner. It provided the best coverage out of the 5 BB Creams and provided the best after-feel after applying the BB Cream.

IOPE’s BB Cream was the less stickiest of the 5 BB Creams ( though the other 4 were not sticky too – Bobbi Brown’s BB Cream being the stickiest ).

Hope In A Blog will be introducing other new BB Creams below that have come out recently, to provide you readers more choice when you are shopping for your Spring 2011 BB Cream!

6) L’arcobaleno AC-11 Super Cell Energy Blemish Balm 라르꼬발레노AC-11비비크림

From the same producers of several high-end BB Creams ( Alexander Kimsco etc), they recently came out with a new BB Cream called the L’arcobaleno AC-11 Super Cell Energy Blemish Balm. Already, there is some buzz around this BB Cream in Korea and has received rave reviews and often compared to the SunnySide VIP BB Cream, one of the top BB Creams in Korea. However, compared to the SunnySide VIP BB Cream, this BB Cream is paraben free, alcohol free, talc free, and mineral oil free. ( SunnySide has also contacted us and has informed us that they are now preparing an upgraded version of the BB Cream which will also be paraben, talc, alcohol free – we’re so excited to try it once it is released! )

Now, this BB Cream contains the current hype – snail mucin and also a new supplement which is called the C-Med-100 ( FDA APPROVED : FDA documents found here ) , which helps to enhance the skin’s natural immunity and enhance the natural DNA repair process. C-Med-100 is an extract of Uncaria Tomentosa also known as Cat’s Claw. It has received much scientific studies and there is supporting evidence towards it’s use in treating cancer, inflammation, viral infections etc. It is also an immunostimulant, antioxidant, and anti bacterial.

It is currently on Introductory Promotion , therefore 40% off the normal price for the full size 50ml , and buy one free one for the 15ml size. This promotion won’t last long therefore if you want to try – this is a perfect time. I remember i bought Skin Ceramics on Buy 1 Free 1 when it was first introduced, but the offer was taken down a few weeks after that and now it’s full prized !

7) LG’s Sooreyan Hyo Fermented BB Cream SPF 30, PA ++ 수려한 효 발효 비비크림

Reader’s Review : Skin Ceramics Blemish Balm Review March 27, 2011

Hope In A Blog’s Introduction

Tina was one of the 3 winners in the SkinCeramics and Beaute Derm BB Cream Giveaway ( all three were from the United States ) . She was also the only one who received the BB Cream out of the 3. The other 2 BB Creams got stolen on the way. Sad smile

Without further ado.. here is Tina’s Review on the BB Cream.

Do check out her blog : here

Tina’s Review

Hope In A Blog hosted a small giveaway, the prize being a sample size of Skin Ceramic BB Cream. I won on the condition of writing a review on this product. My review of this product is completely honest and all opinions are my own.

What it is: Skin Ceramic is a Korean brand of BB cream. Unfortunately, their website is in Korean and my Korean is not good enough to translate what I’m reading. The bottle states: “regeneration skin, wrinkle treatment, oil control, long water, long wear. This BB Cream is for your skin as ceramics.” For a full list of ingredients, click on their website here (ingredients are listed in English as well as Korean). Hope In A Blog claims it’s a higher-end BB cream but I am not able to confirm this because I don’t know the price or where to buy it.

Texture and color: The texture reminded me of Estee Lauder Double Wear Light and it is unlike my other BB creams. It’s thinner and not as creamy as my other BB Creams (read about my hunt for my favorite BB cream here). It has a light chemical-y paint-y kind of smell to it, typical of some liquid foundations. The smell isn’t particularly pleasant but it’s not off-putting either. The color is surprisingly not grey-based like most BB creams. It is very light and has a strong pink undertone to it.

My experience: I tried this twice before deciding that I wouldn’t wear it anymore. The first day I applied a light layer after I moisturized my face then set it with MAC’s Mineralized Skin Finish Natural. There was hardly any coverage, none at all actually. When I wear BB creams, I like to dab a little extra underneath my eyes to help neutralize my undereye circles and usually that works for me. With Skin Ceramic, however, the coverage was so sheer that putting extra underneath my eyes did absolutely nothing. The overall finish was okay but then I thought, maybe my MAC powder made it look better.

Therefore, the second day I applied just Skin Ceramic BB Cream without setting it. The color is so pink that it didn’t look good on me at all. It changed the tone of my face and it wouldn’t match my neck. Skin Ceramic adds pink color without providing any coverage whatsoever. It does oxidize enough to match my NC30 skin tone but the pink undertone really ruins the overall look. I eventually set it with MAC’s MSFN because I wanted to neutralize the pink as much as possible.

For reference: I wear NC 30 in MAC Studio Fix, B30 in Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, 32 in Make Up For Ever Face & Body, 127 in Make Up For Ever HD Foundation. My skin is on the lighter end of “medium” and I have yellow undertones.

Conclusion: I do not like this BB cream at all. I cannot speak for its wrinkle treating properties as I would have to wear this for a while but my opinion is based on its color and lack of coverage. I don’t need much coverage but this miraculously provides NO coverage but it adds color, the wrong color for me I might add. This may work for fair Caucasians who have pink undertones. I don’t personally know any Asians who have pink undertones. If you think the color would match you and if you have oily skin, I think Skin Ceramic would be good for you. My forehead is not oily at all which is the only positive thing that I can find about this BB cream. If you want a high-end BB cream, I recommend A.H.C. Intense Contour Balm. If you want a more affordable BB cream, I would recommend Skin79 Super Plus BB Cream Triple Function (hot pink) or Missha Perfect Cover.

Although I did not like Skin Ceramic BB Cream, I would like to thank Hope In A Blog for hosting the giveaway. Check out their blog if you’re interested in Asian skincare and beauty products.

♥ Tinna
